Erin’s Law

A new law, recently enacted, directs schools to provide education to K- 12 students about sexual assault and abuse awareness.  The law is named for Erin Merryn, who was sexually abused twice growing up. It is important to provide our children the information they need to prevent this type of abuse.  Prairie Grove will be partnering with The CARE Center of the Northwest Center Against Sexual Assault. A letter explaining the content of the two lessons will be provided to parents prior to instruction. In the letter, parents will have a chance for their child to opt out of the instruction. Below is more information about sexual abuse and Erin’s Law:

Toys for Tots & DVD Collection

Toys for Tots was a huge success! We had over 130 toys to donate to children less fortunate! Wow! Way to go Prairie Grove! Thank you to all those who brought in toys, bought or sold canes during junior high lunches, and the student council for their $300.00 donation! We were able to buy a lot of toys! We made the holiday season better for many families in our area!

Our used DVDs collection also went extremely well. We collected over 150 DVDs to donate to the pediatric unit at NIMC. Thank you to all those who contributed to this worth cause. Many children will benefit from your generosity.

Vision and Hearing

Please read the attached letters (below) if you have students in Early Childhood through third grade, eighth grade and any new student or student receiving special services.

MAP Testing

Our second round of MAP (Measures of Academic Growth) testing will take place from January 14th – January 21st. Kindergarten through eighth grade will take the reading and math portion of the MAP test. Please emphasize the importance of these tests to your child. They are one important point of data that we look at to assist us in the placement of your child. Teachers utilize this winter test as a barometer of how they are teaching and if they need to modify their instruction to meet the needs of their students. If you have any questions, please give us a call.

JH Detentions

As stated in a previous email to parents, the junior high staff and I have decided to modify seventh and grade detentions. Detentions are used as a consequence to deter inappropriate behavior and as a vehicle to think about behavior. They are also used to assist us in deterring students from multiple missing homework assignments. We thank you for your support with detentions. Here is the schedule for each grade level and the schedule times for detentions:

6th Grade

Minor Detention: Tuesday & Thursdays during lunch

Major Detention: Designated day after school from 2:45 – 4:45 (students will need to be picked up)

Prairie Ridge 8th Grade Night

Community High School District 155 has finalized the dates and times for 8th Grade Night and are listed as follows:

Prairie Ridge:  Thursday, February 6th, 6:00-8:30 p.m.

If a family has a conflict with a particular date and/or time, they are encouraged to contact the Department of Student Services at their child’s high school for assistance.

Eligibility List

Prairie Grove Junior High is a member of the IESA (Illinois Elementary School Association). Students who receive an “F” on a Friday are ineligible for sporting/student activities from the Monday to the following Saturday. I’ve included an example from the IESA guidelines below for clarification:

Consider a school which checks eligibility every Wednesday. Records are processed through the computer and a printout of all students' scholastic standing is given to the athletic director on Thursday. The athletic director’s office reviews the list and reports Thursday afternoon to the principal that a student is not passing all subjects as of this check. The principal informs the student and coaches on Friday morning that the student is not passing the required work and is thus ineligible for one week, beginning the following Monday morning. The student may play in contests held that evening or on Saturday, the next day.  However, the entire next week, Monday through Saturday, the student is ineligible. The following Wednesday, the process is repeated. This time, when the report reaches the principal on Thursday afternoon, the student's record shows the student is now passing all subjects on a cumulative basis since the beginning of the grading period. Now, the principal will inform the student and coach on Friday morning that the student will become eligible again the following Monday morning. Please note that the student is not permitted to play on this Friday and Saturday because of last week's failure to meet the grade requirements. A student becoming scholastically ineligible by the weekly eligibility check must remain ineligible for one full calendar week before possibly becoming eligible again.

Parents Visiting at Lunch

At the November School Board Meeting, parents visiting the lunchroom was discussed. Many parents and administrators discussed their concerns of safety by allowing this practice to continue. Several school board members voiced their opinion in support of allowing parents to visit the lunchroom. After much discussion, the school board directed administration to come up with a plan. The plan is to pilot an idea that will hopefully incorporate both groups’ interests. Prairie Grove Elementary will follow the steps below:

  1. January 23, 2013 will be a day that parents may come to eat lunch with their child.
  2. The visitation is for parents only and does not extend to other family members or relatives.
  3. The parent lunch will take place away from the rest of the grade level in the Elementary Gym.
  4. Parents must have a volunteer form completed prior to entering the building.
  5. Parents must have a lunch visitor form signed prior to entering the building.
  6. More details will be forthcoming!

Kindergarten Registration

Prairie Grove SD 46 will be hosting Kindergarten Registration January 9, 2013 in order to plan for next school year. Please see the attached flyer for more details below.

Sincerely,

Vic Wight
