Dear PG Parent,

Here is the latest and greatest from PG:

DISTRICT

Strategic Planning
Thursday, February 20, 2014 in the Junior High Conference Room. There will be two sessions for parents and residents to give their input. We will meet from 9:30 - 10:30 AM and again at 6:00 to 7:00 PM. Our goal is elicit answers to the following questions:

  • What are the greatest challenges facing the District?
  • What strengths should the District build on to leverage the future?
  • What skills and abilities must students master to be successful?

Please take the time to complete our short Strategic Planning Survey:

ISAT Testing March 3 - 14th
We will be giving your child state-required achievement tests on March 1st - March 14th. The tests are a part of the Illinois Learning Standards Achievement Test program and are being given to all eligible students. Students in grades 4 and 7 will be tested in reading, mathematics, and science. Students in grades 3, 5, 6, and 8 will be tested in reading and mathematics. The results of these state tests will be reported to you on the School Report Card in the fall. We will review state test results along with other information to help us improve our school program. In addition, you will receive information about your child's performance on the state tests he or she took.

You can help your child do his or her best on the test by:
1. making sure, if possible, that your child attends school on the days of testing;
2. making sure your child gets a good night's sleep the night before testing;
3. providing breakfast on the mornings of testing;
4. reminding your child to ask the teacher questions if her or she does not understand the test directions;
5. letting your child know that you have confidence in his or her ability to do his or her best; and
6. advising your child not to worry about the test - just do the best he or she can.

JUNIOR HIGH

8th Grade Graduation DVD
The 8th Grade DVD committee needs your photos!

Each year a DVD is created to commemorate the 8th graders through their school journey. It is shown at the 8th grade Dinner Dance and is made available for purchase so the kids will always have the memories.

Please send in a Kindergarten or 1st grade portrait as well as an 8th grade portrait ASAP. (You can drop off copies in the Jr. High Office and we will scan them or supply us with high-quality digital copy to pgjh8pics@gmail.com. If dropping off a photo, please send a 4x6 or larger.)

We also need any group photos of three or more current 8th graders from their school years (K-8). Did you attend a school party, chaperone a field trip, help out at a school function or attend a play, band concert, athletic event, variety show or fun fair? Did you snap a picture? EMAIL or SEND IT IN!

Please see the attached document (below) for additional information regarding photos needed to complete the 8th Grade DVD. Note - all photos are due no later than March 20th. Please don't wait! Help complete the DVD today!

ELEMENTARY

PLACEMENT REQUESTS

At this time of the year, some parents start thinking about next school year. Parents wonder how students are placed in class groups and if they can request to have a child placed in a particular classroom. There are many variables that go into making class lists. In this process many characteristics are considered such as, but not limited to, making class lists as balanced as possible, clustering special needs students together to maximize services, matching students’ needs with teacher strengths, and grouping students who will potentially work well together. Because of the complexity of this process, we cannot take requests for specific teachers. Doing so would inhibit us from making equitable classes. Certainly, we know that parents also have good insights into how their children learn. If you would like to request that certain information be considered in a child’s placement, please email me at vwight@dist46.org or write a letter by March 15, as this process begins soon. The most helpful information speaks to the unique needs, talents, and the personality of the child, or the type of classroom structure to which a child best responds. The information you provide will be considered as class groups for next year are finalized and will then be shared with next year’s teacher as an introduction to your child. Once we determine class placements, we will notify parents and students during the month of August.

PARENT DROP OFF
The elementary parent drop-off closes it's doors at 8:45 a.m. Unfortunately, staff have to leave at 8:45 to prepare for classes. If the doors close at 8:45 a.m., we kindly ask you to circle around to the front of the building and drop off your child at the main entrance. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

We are very proud to announce that on March 22nd, Prairie Grove will be hosting the 2014 Odyssey of the Mind State Tournament. We are very excited to be welcoming 30 teams from all over our great state.

We are looking forward to this event, however we are in need of volunteers to assist in making this experience the best it can be.. We will be expecting 300 plus people at this event, so we need as many volunteers as possible. We are looking for teachers, parents, college and high school students to help out in numerous ways.
