Note from the Principal.....

Dear Parents,

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for a great beginning to the school year despite the recent news surrounding our school. Not only do we have excellent teachers at our school, but we have amazing children, supportive parents, and support staff that make our environment excellent. I am proud to be a panther and want to commit to you a renewed sense of bringing us all together. In the nine years that I have been here, WE have all shaped Prairie Grove into a consistent educational success net for kids. It is important that we maintain our momentum and work together to move this great school District beyond what WE have already accomplished.

Very sincerely,

Vic Wight

Spiritwear flyers have been sent or will be sent for your viewing and ordering. Please note that we are working with two wonderful vendors this year. We will be promoting our usual Spirit Day on Fridays, but will also having a contest once per month for the entire district to encourage more spiritwear worn at school. A big thank you to Khushali Shah, Joanne Kelch, Mary Giglio, and Myra Kirchberg for their efforts.

Social and Emotional Learning

The State of Illinois and the Mental Health Act of 2003 have required school districts to incorporate social and emotional standards and curriculum into our school day. We are proud to have been one of the leading schools in this area when it was first passed down. The District continues to utilize Second Step (for the past three years) as our curriculum. Recently, our students took a universal screener to identify what areas within our curriculum we need to focus on. The screener will also be used to help students who may need additional support. If a student needs additional support, their parent/guardian will be contacted prior to any supports being implemented. Here is a link to the state standards:

Veteran’s Day

Veteran’s Day is coming soon. Prairie Grove always honors our veterans each year, whether it is through an assembly, inviting veterans into classrooms or creating a Veteran Wall of Honor. We will be acknowledging our veterans once again this year in an honorable fashion. In the meantime, please see the attachment for an essay contest in which students can partake.

Homework Deadline

Please be reminded that all homework needs to be turned in by Friday, October 19th for anyone that hasn’t turned in homework. It’s very important to get it turned in since the end of the quarter is October 26th.

Junior High

Student Council

Prairie Grove Junior High will be holding an assembly this week. Students running for student council will be campaigning in front of the student body. Based on last year’s great speeches, I look forward to the skills and enthusiasm of the student body. Mrs. Wilke and Mrs. Motl should be congratulated for the work they do with this group of students.

Athletic Director’s Report (from Mrs. Jeanne Salazar)
Once again Prairie Grove sports teams have had successful seasons.
The soccer team ended their regular season with a 3-5 record but proved the Panther Pride runs deep as they went to double overtime in their playoff game against Marengo.  The Panthers left the second overtime period tied 3-3 and went to two shoot-outs.  The Panthers tied Marengo in the first shoot-out 3-3 but were victorious in the second round coming up with a 3-0 win!  Way to go Panthers!!
The volleyball teams have had a hard fought season.  Both the 7th and 8th grade Lady Panthers have proven that they are competitive and fight to the end.  Congratulations to the 8th grade team for their 3rd place finish and Congratulations to the 7th grade team for their 1st place finish at conference tournament!  Way to Go Lady Panthers!
Boys Basketball season is getting underway.  All three teams (6th, 7th and 8th grade) have already conducted try-outs and the teams are ready to practice.  The first game of the season for 6th grade is scheduled for Monday, October 29 against Johnsburg Red in the Elementary Gym.  The 7th and 8th grade teams open their season with a game against Woodstock-Creekside.  The 7th grade will be playing in Woodstock while the 8th graders will be playing on their home court.  Good Luck Panthers!

Halloween Parade/Parties Our annual Halloween parade will take place October 31st beginning at 2:00 p.m. rain or shine. All parents are welcome to attend. Parents will be able to park at Snap-on Parking and catch a shuttle to the school. We aim to save the parking around the school for the room parents to be able to drop off supplies for the parties. Please remember that, after the parade, only the room parent and two parents who have been asked to assist are allowed back in the building for the parties, which begin at 2:30 p.m.
