Prairie Grove Consolidated School District 46 received acknowledgement from Commonwealth Edison Co. (ComEd) that its application for ComEd Energy-Efficiency Program was received and found to meet all the necessary program requirements.

This Illinois Future Energy Job Act award will help the District replace broken and inefficient light fixtures in its Elementary School Gymnasium, Junior High School Cafeteria and in the District's Multi-purpose Room and Theatrical Stage areas at a 45% product discount with an estimated award value of $5,158.

The energy-efficiency project includes the replacement of 95 high-intensity discharge (HID) and fluorescent lamp fixtures with light-emitting diode (LED) fixtures. "These new fixtures are rated to reduce watt consumption by between 60-70% which will decrease our footprint on the environment while saving taxpayers thousands of additional dollars annually," Chief School Business Official Kevin Werner said.

Other benefits of LED lights are that they last longer than HID and fluorescent lights, they do not require warm-up periods, they do not give off UV and they do not contain mercury. All these benefits lead to reduced maintenance costs and greater student, staff and community safety.

The project to replace old fixtures was completed on December 31, 2017.
