Science Lab News
by Fran Wilson
Welcome to the lab this year. Our lab welcomed a student teacher, Sharon Gliesmann, to the lab this fall. She is a student at Trinity College, and is SO excited to be working at Prairie Grove as an intern teacher.
The courtyard is also changing, and we have shut off the waterfall. Once the snows block the doorways, it's very difficult to maintain the waterfall. It will be turned on again in the spring.
Don't forget to check this site in the future to see what we are doing in the lab. I'll sort this by grade level so you can check your child's activities during the lab.
Kindergarten Weather. They are learning how to read a thermometer and about the 4 seasons.
First Grade Beginning the unit on Earth Science. We did a unit on soil, thanks to Mrs. Gliesmann, and now are sorting and classifying rocks.
Second Grade Finishing the very long animal unit. They are studying various animal groups, and how animals and their habitats interact. We also just looked up close and personal at insects!
Third Grade Also nearing the end of the animal unit, we are doing predator/prey activities, including survival of animals during the winter.
Fourth Grade They are completing the unit on properties of matter, density, volume, liquid surface tension and adhesion. The will begin studying electricity.
Fifth Grade These students are working on the unit on earth science in their classrooms, and we have just begun an extension of earth science by charting the climate of Crystal Lake and comparing it with the climate of Miami, Florida
