Special Programs

by Vic Wight

Prairie Grove Elementary provides a variety of services to our students. We would like to take this opportunity to highlight several of our wonderful programs.

Reading Recovery

This is a highly effective short-term intervention of a one-on-one tutoring program for low achieving first graders. This program offers a one-half hour lesson daily for twelve to twenty weeks with a specially trained Reading Recovery teacher.

English Language Learners (ELL)

This is a program that is provided for all second language learners in District 46. The program is structured to increase English language proficiency skills in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. District 46 also provides translation services to those parents who may face their own limitations in English proficiency. If such services are needed please contact the classroom teacher in advance of any Parent Teacher Conferences.

Accelerated Curriculum Enrichment (ACEs)

This is a program that is provided to students who meet a comprehensive criterion, which may be ISAT tests, Terra Nova tests, cognitive skills index, language/math placement tests, parent checklist, and a teacher checklist. Math students in the program are pulled out every day during their grade level's math block and are instructed at an accelerated pace, receiving instruction in the next years' curriculum. Language Arts students are pulled once per week and are instructed in enrichment activities to enhance their learning.
