Welcome to Sixth Grade Social Studies
by Kathy Terrill
The sixth grade social studies curriculum is an exciting exploration of ancient cultures. We will begin the year studying geography and the Universals of Culture. These "universals" are common functions which cultures serve and are found in ALL cultures. These "universals" include material culture, the arts, communication, social organizations, social control, conflicts, economic organizations, education, and world views.
As we study each culture, we will focus on these "universals" to help students understand basic human commonalities and the importance of individual and cultural differences. The cultures we will be studying this year include Egypt, China, India, Greece, and Rome
